WELLS SEARCH & RECOVERY
Hamilton County, NY 12/03/05
CASART was
notified on Saturday 12/03/05 at 6:00a.m. by NYS Forest Rangers to activate the
team and report to the Incident Command Post at the Wells Fire Department on
Rt. 30 in Wells, NY at 11:00a.m. Type
III winter ready searchers were requested to locate a male hunter, age 80,
missing since Friday
12/02/05. The subject
was last seen as a part of a small hunting party after leaving his cabin on
Friday morning for a day of big game hunting.
When the subject did not return in the late afternoon, the other
members of the hunting party started to search for the subject, and when
darkness overtook them, they notified NYS Forest Rangers of the missing
hunter. Forest Rangers arrived
on the scene in the early evening and began Type I searches for the subject
that continued through the night until
4:00a.m., without success.
Volunteer Search & Rescue teams Team 5-1 and LASAR were then notified
by the Forest Rangers and were on the scene by
7:00a.m. Type II
searches were conducted and the subject was located around
9:00a.m., deceased, about ½ mile from his cabin.
It was assumed that the subject died of a stroke or heart attack.
The following
seven (8) CASART members reported to the Incident Command Post at 11:00a.m.
to discover that the search had been successfully terminated: Dan
Carmichael, Nancy Langham, Carolyn O’Hara, Greg O’Hara, Connie Perry, Dawn
Timm, Eileen Tobin and Roy Reehil.
