CASART
- 17th Activation
NORTH WILMURT
SEARCH & RESCUE
Herkimer County, NY 10/17/06
CASART was activated for a search & rescue mission in the
Town of Ohio
on Tuesday 10/17/06
by the New York State Federation of Search and Rescue Teams (NYSFEDSAR).
Five CASART members reported to the Incident Command Post (ICP) around 9:15a.m., Gary Evans, Jim Holt, Greg
O'Hara, Eileen Tobin and Bob Wheeler. Three members were assigned as
a crew to conduct a Type I search, one member was assigned to accompany a K9
handler, and the other member was assigned to join a Forest Ranger to
conduct a Type I search. The Forest Rangers had set up the ICP in the
Village
of North Wilmurt to
search for a hunter, Dominick (Dom) Dominquez or subject, who was last seen
around 1:00p.m. Monday 10/16/06 and was
reported missing around 8:00p.m.
when he failed to meet his hunting companions on a trail earlier in the day.
The subject, a 45 year old male in good physical condition was dressed in
full camo and carried a muzzle loading rifle. He got disoriented and
eventually decided to follow a compass bearing out. Unfortunately he
picked due south (west, Northwest would have been better) and the first
recognizable trail/road was 5 miles south. The subject walked out on
his own, way outside the immediate search area, in good condition.
A big thank you to those who were able to respond to the
activation. The weather was wet, temperatures in the upper forties and
the terrain was easy to moderate in open hardwoods.
